When she launched Adeeni Design Group (adeenidesigngroup.com) in 1999, Claudia Juestel chose a name that reflects her approach to interiors. “No matter how humble your home,” she said, “it should be your castle.”

“Adeeni,” Juestel says, is a Yoruba word that translates to “royal people.”

After studying hotel management and working in the hospitality industry in Austria, Juestel moved to San Francisco and attended the Academy of Art University. She’s held positions in art galleries, Ralph Lauren’s home division and a design firm specializing in hotel renovations.

With interior design, “I love the creativity, the problem solving and the styling,” Juestel said.

Her portfolio features an eclectic mix of projects, including a green remodel in San Francisco, a cottage in Carmel and a 1918 farmhouse in Walnut Creek. In November, Juestel is again participating in Dining by Design (diffasf.org), which showcases dining installations from top designers. The event benefits HIV/AIDS patients.

Juestel says the rapport with her clients is critical. She advises that homeowners “hire the designer you truly like because you will spend a lot of time together. Mutual respect and enjoyment are paramount to creating a successful interior.”

Approach:

“Imperfections and peculiarities intrigue me in many things as well as in people …”

Working in a variety of styles, from traditional to contemporary, from rustic to elegant, it is the firm’s philosophy that designers can break away from a “signature” style, and that each home should reflect the owners’ individual lifestyles. The approach is more that of a set designer, which results in each project becoming its own original piece of art, created in close collaboration with the clients. The inspiration for a design project starts with the architecture, the location and surroundings of a particular building, but then evolves through insight into the clients’ distinctive personalities and interests. It is the firm’s goal to realize an interior that honestly expresses the owners, but is also infused with the kind of creativity and uniqueness they might not have dared to tempt on their own.

Despite the variety of styles a common thread runs through all projects exhibiting Claudia Juestel’s keen sense of color, her painstaking attention to detail, and her aim for absolute comfort and practicality. Her European upbringing gives her a genuine appreciation for history and a firm belief that a home should not look too “decorated”, but rather as if it has evolved over time.

Using a mixture of unique pieces, antiques and flea market finds, combined with furniture, rugs, lighting and fabrics custom-designed for each individual project allows for a one-of-a-kind look specifically tailored to each client. Juestel’s artist background not only allows her to mix her own paint colors when she cannot find just the right shade amongst the millions to choose from, but also to assist clients in selecting and placing art that both enhances the design of their home as well as speaks to theirs souls.
