J Vineyards & Winery Launches New Labels and Brand

J Vineyards & Winery, the Russian River Valley luxury wine producer whose iconic yellow “J” logo has graced both its varietal and sparkling bottlings for over 20 years, will introduce a fresh look to this year’s varietal wine releases with the launch of a new “J Vineyards” brand and corresponding packaging. With the evolution of the winery’s varietal wines it was decided a differentiation from the J sparkling wine packaging was required. The new “J Vineyards” brand and packaging was born from this renewed sense of purpose.
Beginning with the February release of the 2008 J Vineyards Russian River Valley Vin Gris, and followed this Summer and Fall by the 2008 Russian River Valley Pinot Gris, 2007 Pinot Noirs and 2007 Russian River Valley Chardonnay, the J Vineyards varietal wine portfolio will be graced by new packaging designed by award-winning package design firm CF Napa. The new packaging utilizes simple yet striking elements to represent the effects of the Russian River Valley on the wine. The background terroir pattern on the labels is delicately infused into the paper, suggesting striations in water, stone and vines, which are the base components in winemaking. The packaging colors, as well as the new bottle profiles, pay homage to Burgundian wine bottle attributes without imitation in a simple, sleek and modern tone.
“Our intent is to create a timeless, yet contemporary luxury message which conveys Judy Jordan’s sense of place and commitment to excellence,” comments J’s Vice President of Marketing, Mark Marinozzi. “The introduction of “J Vineyards” as the brand name signifies Judy’s commitment to estate grown wines. Our intent was to create a message of contemporary luxury and timeless style in new packaging appealing to anyone seeking out Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs, Chardonnay and other small lot wines of incredible quality, style and winemaking prowess.”
“J’s inception in 1986 was based on a groundbreaking mission to produce méthode champenoise sparkling wines in the Russian River Valley, and our original yellow logo reflects that vision with style and elegance,” notes Founder Judy Jordan. “It has been 15 years since we started making Pinot Noir, and our knowledge and understanding of the intricacies of the Russian River Valley have grown exponentially. We now know that our vineyards have more soil types than those found in all of France, and through meticulous site-specific winemaking practices, Winemaker George Bursick and his team have leveraged this diversity to elevate our varietal wine program to a luxury level. The new “J Vineyards” packaging pays homage to this attention to terroir and varietal winemaking.”
J farms over 250 acres in Sonoma County’s Russian River Valley appellation where Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris varietals thrive. The Russian River Valley is known for its cool, coastal marine fog allowing 115–120 days of slow, even heat accumulation which means longer hang time on the vine to achieve optimal sugar and acid balance. J’s estate acreage checkerboards the Russian River Valley encompassing varying microclimates and over twenty different soil types. This diversity of locations, soils, trellises, rootstocks (9), and clones (15 clones of Pinot Noir, 4 clones of Chardonnay, 2 clones of Pinot Gris) gives winemaker George Bursick a tremendous range of flavor profiles to express his artistry in creating wines of exceptional complexity and grace. J’s first vintage of Nicole’s Vineyard Pinot Noir was released in 1994, and J now produces a total of six different Pinot Noirs, as well as Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Viognier and Pinotage.
